The Meaning Behind the Name “MULTIPLA”

“MULTIPLA” is a coined term born from the fusion of “Multiple” and “Art.” While the phrase “Multiple Art” often conjures images of product-like works created by artists—art leaning toward design or utility—we see something quite different in the works of Japanese creators.

Many of them transcend mere craftsmanship, imbuing their pieces with an inner spirituality, a quiet presence that shifts the work from object to art. These are not simply products refined by skill, but vessels of sensibility—expressions shaped by a distinct Japanese intuition. We define this unique sensibility as MULTIPLA: a concept that reflects both multiplicity and an unseen depth.

This exhibition exists to give form to that new definition—to offer the world a glimpse of the beauty and transience that arise when art and spirit converge.

Takumi: The Essence of Japanese Craftsmanship

In Japan, the word Takumi (匠) embodies the spirit of master artisans—those who dedicate their lives to perfecting their craft. From time-honored traditions to innovative expressions, Takumi represents the seamless blend of skill, dedication, and artistic vision.

The MULTIPLA brings together a distinguished selection of creators—from revered masters to rising talents—spanning woodworking, ceramics, leathercraft, kaleidoscopes, glasswork, and beyond. This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to experience the depth and diversity of Japanese craftsmanship, where each piece reflects not only technical mastery but also the soul of its maker.

Join us in San Francisco as we celebrate the enduring legacy and evolving future of Takumi.
